Dear Mother:

I received your letter at noon today with the stamps in it, the Northern Light and the box to night. I haven't opened the box yet but they must be the doughnuts you were sending me. I just finished supper so I'll wait until I'm hungry before opening it. i don't know what you mean about the certificates but I haven't got any. Are they missing. Have you been receiving my certificates from the R.C.A.F. and have you turned any of my savings into Bonds as you were going to do.
I was over to Detroit on my forty-eight and had a swell time. Gosh the people certainly are friendly over there. I spent Friday and Saturday nights there and all day Sunday until six P.M. when I left the city. All I spent was two dolalrs. Greg's uncle bought and gave us each two cartons of cigarettes so I didn't have to buy any.

All the entertainment there is free for service men, even the buses and street cars. I'm sending you a little booklet about Greenfield villiage which I saw saturday. boy what a place, I wish you could be able to see it.
There was a Flight Sargeant Nester, one of our instructors drowned at Port Stanley Saturday night about five oclock. He and a corporal jumped in after a girl who had slipped and fell off the breakwater. The waves were terribly high and Nester was smashed up against the stone breakwater and then disapeared. He was found this morning almost in the very same place. He was about the most popular instructor on the station and a wonderful swimmer. A big military funeral will be held for him here this week.
I have done alright in my exams so far, even the carburetors. We are having our intermediate either thursday, friday or

Saturday of this week and its realy going to be tough. I noticed too that they are washing a lot of fellows out of this course, in preference to aircrew.
I have a picture here of most of our boys in uniform, and I will send it to you sometime this week.
This is all I can think of for this time. Write again soon.
Love to all
James.
